Special Education Services

Golden Door Charter School

Special education is distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • Comprehensive evaluation of a student's learning and behavioral characteristics.
  • Instruction by teachers trained and certified in the education of children with special needs.
  • Instruction tailored to students' skills and needs.
  • Use of specialized methods, materials, and equipment, if necessary.
  • Ongoing monitoring of student's progress and program with revision, if necessary.
  • Provision of related services.

Special education is provided by teachers certified in the education of children with disabilities. These teachers may be assisted by classroom aides. In addition, children may receive services by such professionals as a speech-language therapist, occupational therapist, or physical therapist.

Special education can take place in a variety of educational settings, including the regular classroom and is also not limited to a particular academic focus. Children eligible for special education may receive instruction in any area, which contributes significantly, to his or her education. Thus children may receive special education in such diverse subjects as math, reading, language arts, science, self-help skills, or organization and study skills.
